Mail With Si / Ongoing

The project, Mail With Si, is a way to create a togetherness, for myself and the wearers of the garment. For myself, this is a way of making, and giving. Giving people something to look forward to, and think about, and finally getting to experience it. That’s what I want to give to the people who model my clothing on the runway, and off. And that is what I am trying to give to people in this time of distance and isolation to make them less lonely—and myself to feel less of that separation. Exploring the act of mail to be an outreach, I want to give people the opportunity to participate in my art practice. I find it thrilling to watch people interact with my work. I have only worked one other time with interactive work, that was in February 2020, before the pandemic; in a gallery setting. Now I have to find a way to get the art to people in a world of distancing, to continue the interaction and involvement. When I work with such intimate concepts like the home and clothing, I am creating tactile themes, creating wearable art, and having people experience the wearing of it, is the point.

This project will be a series of garments, that will be handmade from my own drafted patterns. The textiles will be hand printed and and dyed, using fabrics that are wearable, in the terms of comfort, practicality, durability, as well as easy to care for. The garments will be documented though the participants eyes and experiences. They have the creative freedom to take photos of them in the outfits, with the disposable camera that will be sent with the clothing. They will send the camera back when they use up the film.

For this project to work, I will be creating garments, and sending them to the people that filled out an application form. This project is meant to showcase the fun, excitement and intimacy between the artists, their work, and the wearier/participant. The camera will be a disposable camera with coloured film. The disposable cameras are a tool that will keep all the photos consistent and will create a collection of photos once printed. The deal is that the participants take photos of them wearing the garment, they can do it editorial style, simple documentation style, etc. they get full artistic license to have fun with it, all I will ask is for them to send the camera back so that I can get it developed.
